Rinji's summary page

Rinji (RINJI) is the given nickname of a special Eevee the player can obtain through in-game trade in Pokémon Brown. Rinji is special in that it is the only Eevee capable of evolving into Leafeon in the entire game, and the only way to obtain one.

Overview[]

(Note: Need verification if Rinji can evolve into other Eeveelutions through their normal means)
The trade is located in Botan City's hidden Trading House, requiring Surf to access by going east from the city's bridge. A woman there will ask the player a Gligar in exchange for her Eevee. Rinji will have the OT of "Trainer", its IVs and ID number are random and its level will be the same as the traded Gligar. Like all traded Pokémon, it will have an increased EXP gain. It is the only Eevee in the game able to evolve into Leafeon, it will evolve as soon as you level it up, at any level. A man in the trading house tells the player that Rinji was raised in the forest, hinting them to the relation to Leafeon.

Obtaining[]

Requiring Surf to access, the trade can only be done after obtaining the fifth badge at Castro Valley's gym and obtaining the HM on Route 61 through Castro Forest.

While the required backtracking to reach Botan City might seem minimal, a Gligar is required for the trade. Wild Gligar can be found in the elusive 30 Years Cave located on the southern part of Route 52, which luckily becomes available after obtaining Surf and is located just north of Seashore City, where the sixth gym is located. Gligar are still rare within the cave and might take a bit of time to find, they will always be level 32. Using Fly to negate the backtracking between Seashore and Botan would be a good thing to have.

Alternatively, a level 30 Gligar can be obtained as one of the prizes in the Azalea Gym, but mind that picking it will make Sneasel unavailable until the end of the game. Level 19 Gligar can also be found in the post-League Final Dungeon, they have the benefit of being the only way to allow Rinji/Leafeon to access Razor Leaf and Synthesis in its learnset, as other Gligar would result in the traded Eevee being too overleveled to learn them due to Brown's lack of a move reminder. Although, requiring access to the very last area of the game makes this option very questionable in usability.
